What’s “Sasano Itto-bori”
North-East (TOHOKU 東北) region of Japan, there is Yamagata Prefecture.
Sasano is the distinct of Yonezawa City of Yamagata Pref.
It was very famous that the craft persons of “Ittou-bori” (sometimes I’m writing “Itto-bori” or “Ittou bori” and so on).
Ittou-bori means “carving using one sward (knife).
Most of carving crafts are created using some sort of knives, small and big and so on. However, Ittou-bori craft persons are using only a knife that is called as “Sarukiri”.
Craft persons are telling that the method has been inherited around 1,200 years. Then, the works are telling Japanese traditional carving style, also the craft persons has been innovating with “Sarukiri”.

Story for completion
As you can see the movie, craft persons (“Kouzin”) must be in forest for finding out the materials while in bitterly cold winter time. Because, snow and the cold purge the leaves, then it is easy to find out the tree as the material.
Kouzin use just 2 kinds of trees, Aburakoshi and Enjyu. You may understand how difficult to find out these kinds trees from the forest mountain.
After cutting the materials from the forest, the materials have to be dried while in half years – 2 years.
After these long and hard processes, Kouzin can use Sarukiri to carve.
It is necessary to be the “professional Kozin” for 10 years. However, the young persons – Koyama-san can be the professional using just 5 years. He and his 2 friends “Sato brothers” are the young stars and hope of future of Sasano Ittou-Bori.

Uniqueness of Sasano Ittou-Bori
As we wrote as above, it is very unique traditional craft of Japan.
Also, Kouzins are creating the works with the mind of customers.
For example, the figure of the works as like “Eagle – make dreams come true, hold the happiness and dream” , “Mandarin dack – the symbol of the nice couple, and find out the nice partner, harmonious with the partner and family and so on”.
Not only the figure, one of the material tree “Enjyu (槐) ” is very luxury, and the sound in Japanese is same as “Happy Long Life (延寿)”.
We believe you can feel the mind and lucky from the one of Japanese traditional craft “Ittou-Bori”.
